I'm R.A.D.

My university offers Rape Aggression Defense (R.A.D.) System courses which are female only (male police officers are the only men allowed) self-defense classes. The deal usually is that you pay for the course the first time ($10-$40ish) and then you can take the course anywhere in the country for free for as many extra times as you'd like for life. My school offers it for FREE to not just students, but community members as well, and I jumped at the opportunity to get completely free self-defense classes for life!

I'm currently working at a rape crisis center and though I absolutely adore the work that I get to do there, rape is constantly on my mind. Rape is absolutely terrifying and I'm in constant awe of our clients and their ability to overcome their attacks. That said, it's always in my mind that a perpetrator could have followed one of our clients to our door. It gives me peace of mind to be prepared.

We learned about fight, flight, and freeze when I began the internship and there are many circumstances where I hear that a client couldn't fight back. Maybe I won't be able to fight if I am ever attacked, I won't know until I'm in that situation; R.A.D. prepares you for that. It has taught us far more than how to punch; I've learned the importance of yelling v. screaming, distraction techniques, and  how to intimidate an attacker that may prevent the entire circumstance from occurring in the first place. I'm so happy I have taken the course and I will recommend it to any woman because it makes me feel safer and confident, which is particularly important as a solo female traveler. I highly, highly suggest it.
